Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

My group and I decided to do the song "Glitter" by Tyler, the Creator.

The song's genre is alternative R&B. Conventionally, the general themes of Alternative R&B are as follows: love, masculine and feminine energies, and some sort of conflict or feelings to be said. In the music videos of Alternative R&B, there are either darker lighting/settings, such as a city at night, a house party, or lighter settings, such as during a sunset or sunrise, on the beach, or surrounded by nature. The camera usage in these videos usually follows an actor or character around while music is being lip-synced. Alongside this are usually portrayals of the song's message or certain lyrics. An example of this is in musician Steve Lacy's music video for songs "Ryd/Dark Red," the message of "Ryd" is made known with a parked car with a woman sitting inside in front of a laundromat, focusing on Steve Lacy's face. However, more likely than not, both are included. The artist's face is usually made known, as well as what the song's message or lyrics mean. These music videos don't tend to have sophisticated messages or video concepts, but rather, are more straight forward and simple.
